Every dark store role, one platform
From the picking floor to store leadership. Salary benchmarks, role guides, and candidates for each.
Pickers and packers are the core of every dark store. They pick items from racks against app orders, pack them for dispatch, and keep the store hitting its delivery promise. Blinkit calls this role Captain; Zepto and Swiggy Instamart hire it as Picker or Picker Executive.
Loaders handle inbound stock: unloading supply trucks, moving crates into the store, and putting away inventory so pickers always have full racks. At many stores the role blends with picking during peak hours.
Scanning and billing associates verify picked orders, scan items through the store system, and close out billing so every order leaves accurate. It is the quality gate between picking and dispatch.
Delivery partners carry orders the last mile, from the dark store to the customer door, on two-wheelers, inside a 10 to 20 minute promise. Earnings are per-order with incentives, so monthly income varies with hours and order volume.
Shift incharges run the store floor for their shift: assigning pickers, clearing blockers, and owning the delivery promise while the store manager handles the wider operation. It is the first supervisory step in a dark store career.
Store incharges own day-to-day store operations: staffing, inventory health, audits, and coordination with the platform city team. At smaller stores this is the senior-most role on site.
Store managers own the whole store: P&L inputs, team hiring and retention, inventory, compliance, and the relationship with the platform. A good store manager is the difference between a store that bleeds staff and one that runs itself.
Dark store managers run larger-format stores with bigger teams and higher order volumes, often across multiple shifts. The title is common at Zepto; responsibilities mirror a store manager with more scale.
Store associates are the flexible hands of a dark store: picking during rushes, restocking between them, and keeping the floor audit-ready. Swiggy Instamart hires this as a distinct role; at other platforms it overlaps with picking.
Warehouse helpers keep the back of the store moving: sorting inbound crates, staging stock for putaway, and clearing empties. Less customer-facing pressure than picking, steadier pace.
Quality checkers protect the customer promise: checking freshness on produce and dairy, catching damaged or expiring stock, and flagging quality issues before an order ships.
Supervisors sit between the floor and store leadership: running a team of pickers and packers, keeping quality up during rushes, and stepping in wherever the shift needs muscle or judgement.
Area managers own a cluster of dark stores: store-manager hiring and coaching, cross-store metrics, and the operational health of a whole zone. The most senior store-side role we list.
